Lessons in Trusting the Universe Pt. II

Last month I left New York on a journey to become a yoga teacher. I studied in a country I had never been to, with people I had never met, learning some more lessons and trusting the universe.

My long hiatus from blogging was spent soul searching for understanding, acceptance and balance. Something we can all always use a little teaspoon more of. Although I had signed up to become a yoga teacher in June 2015, by the time the class arrived, teaching was not my priority and that was fine. There were other things to figure out.

What I find to be amazing is that no matter how crazy your life can feel, the universe has a quick tendency to humble you and in doing so, reminding you that you’re here for a very specific yet mysterious reason.

This blog seems short considering I’ve been MIA for about two months but that’s life.

Wishing the best for all of you.

Talk soon.

“A bigger house, a happier wife”

It was weird this morning, getting out for a run that my body really needed after a long absence. A new neighbor is building his home on Saratoga lake and he’s facetiously singing, “We’ll drink lots of beer and build a bench over here, what a great life, a bigger house and a happier wife.”

How can you not laugh at that? We all want bigger and better. We want what’s new and improved in the belief it will improve us by association.

I’ve been living in a Harry Potter closet for over a year. It’s a make-shift room that everyone walks through to get to the washing machine. My bed is the laundry table and there’s a food cabinet in my bedroom that once was our house’s storage room. I can’t even close my door all the way because it’s broken and I get locked in. When my dogs come in and lay on the floor, I literally can’t leave until they do.

Honestly, I secretly love to hate it and hate to love it. I remind myself how blessed I am to have a home, but, naturally, I sometimes find myself thinking, “If I had my own place, my own room, my own office, I would write, practice, dance, cook, do everything more.”

Would I though? Would my situation change my habits? Not at all.

We should all revel in our lives’ bits of chaos. Go a little crazy. Learn to love more of life with less. We should always remind ourselves that don’t need lots of money or space or new things. We need self-efface and sufficiency because one day it can all be taken away and to be honest, one day it will.

Make a home in your happiness.

Alima Pure

If you’re a lover of natural beauty, you’re going to love this.

Alima is a makeup brand that focuses on using the least ingredients with the highest quality. Their pure products are never tested on animals and their packaging is created with eco-friendly soy based inks and 100% recycled paper.

“Our makeup is crafted to help every woman present her best self to the world with confidence. Women everywhere living their lives to the fullest, achieving their goals, making a difference; that is beauty at its most beautiful.” – Alima Pure

Their message is good and their products are better. I have been struggling with acne lately thanks to a hormone pill I had to take for a week. I feel extremely uncomfortable in my own skin while working where people are constantly looking at it, but, my Alima products really make a difference.

When I need to, I can cover up my blemishes without the stress of clogging my pores. I know the products only contain basic minerals and these cruelty free products bring out the best in my face and my investments. I really feel naturally beautiful even on the days that I’ve needed a little extra foundation. It gives my skin a nice glow and feels like a healthy enhancement rather than a caked on mask.

  • 1x Luminous Shimmer Blush – Rosa / Sample for $1.75 each
  • 1x Concealer – Sand / Full for $14.00 each
  • 1x Satin Matte Foundation Samples – Cool 1 for $1.75 each

(Images sent in my confirmation email)

My purchasing process went very smooth, which is exactly what I felt when I put of my Alima foundation for the first time.

Make up can be hard to order online and that fact is taken into account. Samples of all products are offered at the low cost of $1.75 and they are an amazing value! The only full product that I purchased was my foundation, which was just $14.

I also received an additional product of which I am unsure of, but, like they say, if it’s free, it’s for me! I believe my additional green beauty treat is one of their new eye shadows and I am very happy they sent it. It looks too dark for my taste and is definitely not something I would pick out for myself by any means, but, it goes on so lite and effortlessly that I can actually see myself wearing it.

Overall, I’m extremely happy to add these products to my makeup basket. I feel like my skin can breath but it’s also glowing and looks natural. Obsession can’t quite cover it. Thanks Alima! xo

My Makeup Remover Comes from Coconuts

Coconut oil has a ridiculously long list of uses. I mean the list is like Ted’s narration in “How I Met Your Mother.” I could make this quick and easy by telling you that I use coconut oil for everything, I mean, ev-ery-thing. No joke, but, I prefer making this into 9 seasons.

1. Buy coconut oil. You can find it in nearly any food store. You can spend anything between $5-25. It’s whatever you prefer.

2. Bring it home.

3. Have makeup on your face. Waterproof, thick or tough to take off? No problem. Coconut oil breaks up and releases makeup from your skin from and lashes.

4. Rub some coconut oil between your hands to melt it a little before putting it on your face.

5. SOFT SKIN. Yes, now you’re getting it. Not only is this an affordable but it’s a great moisturizer for your face and especially for the delicate skin beneath your eyes.

6. Use a cotton ball to wipe off your makeup.

7. Be amazed.

8. Give yourself a high five.

9. Leave a comment about how much you love coconut oil and your favorite way to use it.

There is a Time and Place for Carbs

Carbohydrates are fuel for the fit. They give the body essential nutrients that provide the body with energy for daily activities.

The myth that carbs add fat to your body derives from eating those macro-nutrients at the wrong time.

Believe it or not there is a time and place for carbs!

1. Eat your carbs early in the day. A bowl of oatmeal is a great wake up call.

2. Eat your carbs after your workout while your body is recovering. Your body will eat those macro-nutrients right up! This is especially important for those of you hoping to gain muscle or lose weight.

3. Avoid eating carbs late at night or any other hour that you may spend resting like before going to an office job and sitting in a chair all day.

Thank you Obi Obadike for these awesome tips!

Why Does my Yoga Practice Hurt?

I recently met someone who just began their yoga journey. The goal he set for himself was to cure his back pain, something that so many of us deal with on an all too often basis.

When I began a few years ago, I did so for the similar reasons. I suffered from stress related back pains that caused knots and sharp pains. Often, I could hunch my shoulders forward just an inch or two and my back would crack itself. It was embarrassing being a college student with the spine of a senior citizen. I also had anxiety issues and fitness goals I wanted to work on and so, started my yoga journey.

Long story short, this friend of mine watched a YouTube video and felt he strained his back even more.

But yoga can heal anything and anyone! WHAT HAPPENED?

YouTube is great, you can learn everything from tying your shoes to cooking dinner on there. But yoga, not always so great on there.

Why? You’re too distracted. You’re not connected with your body on a deep level because you’re too worried that the volume isn’t loud enough or that you’re not watching enough.

I saw him do a downward dog that tightened his neck because he was looking in every direction. Hips were off and so on and so forth. It’s not about perfection. Yoga is freedom and connection.

Yoga is based on meditation, flowing through a vinyasa flow without straining your body or mind. The goal is nirvana. I highly suggest attending a class for beginners. Your computer can teach you poses to take you there but, truthfully, only you can take yourself there. Relax. Breath. Flow.

Read it or study it but don’t bring your laptop to your mat. In fact close your laptop, let your mind wander. Explore. Inhale. Exhale. Enjoy.

Post Workout Kale Challenge

I am making progress in liking kale. About a third of this smoothie is kale and I drank it all! Sorry, puppies can’t have any. 😋

I used my favorite protein shake, EAS AdvantagEdge, chocolate fudge.

  • Add one EAS drink.
  • One large scoop of Cabot Greek Vanilla Bean yogurt.
  • Two handfuls of Italian Mix Kale.
  • A handful of blueberries.
  • Some ice cubes.
  • Blend it up & serve!

This smoothie has a nice balance of sweetness and a touch of tartness. It’s a great pick-me-up because of those two tastes.

I love EAS because their drinks are delicious, nutritious and don’t make me feel bloated. I highly recommend them.
Have a good day everyone!
